Every year, on an early October weekend, Vernon Parish hosts the West Louisiana Forestry Festival. It is our “county fair.” (Louisiana doesn’t have counties; it has parishes. Other than Fort Polk, Vernon Parish’s biggest industry is logging.)
The WLFF is such a big deal that school is let out for two days, in order for everyone to participate in the festivities. We have gone for four years straight. It feels like a family get-away, but we don’t have to drive three hours and get a hotel. We love it!
We love the quaint humor of the rides, the 4-H exhibits, and the rodeo parade. And the food! Not only is there lemonade, Frito pies and funnel cakes, but also local delicacies like gumbo, Zwolle tomales and crawfish etouffee.
We really love running into folks we know. Not sure any county fair will ever measure up to the memories of this one.
