Mark in the field. Hyrum on spring break. Girls napping. Rebecca exhausted.
I told Hyrum to entertain himself while I took a nap, too. "Read, watch tv, do whatever you want, just don't burn the house down." When I woke up, I found him at the dining table creating stuff out of paper, tape, etc. "Thanks for entertaining yourself, how did you do?"
"Bless my heart," he said, "I was so bored."

Beautiful Words: Tropical Storm (9/1/08)
Just checked CNN. The storm symbol on top of our house no longer has a 1 on it. It's now a tropical storm symbol. May CNN's prophecy come to pass: Gustav will no longer be a hurricane by the time he gets here.

Thanks to everyone for your prayers. I believe that Gustav's shrinking was a direct result of many prayers.
We're unscathed. We didn't even loose power. (Another reason why I'm glad we live on the Army post. Surrounding homes did loose power, but will be up, again, soon.) We're in the process of checking on others in our congregation, and I suspect we'll be sending Mark and extra food to others in our stake boundaries and beyond. (A stake is like a Catholic diocese. Ours covers central Louisiana: from Texas into Mississippi, from Natchitoches to Opelousas.)
One of the things I was least excited about when we found out we were coming here was the threat of hurricanes, especially knowing that Rita had hit our parish (county) pretty hard. I'm thankful to have come through this weekend with confidence that a Rita-size storm, or one bigger, would be doable for our family. Even if Mark is deployed. That's a darn good feeling.

Here We Go Again . . . (9/12/08)
Ike's projected path took us by surprise, today, when it took a sharp right turn. One person affectionately called Ike "Rita's little brother," because he seems fated to follow her path. This storm might hit us harder than the last--we'll be east of the storm. As Gustav taught us, west is best. Many folks in our stake boundaries who were east of Gustav, many just an hour directly east of us, have had pretty serious flooding. Two to four feet of water in their homes. Thankfully, we don't expect that kind of flooding.
We are prepping for power outage. I have vowed to keep the washer and dryer going non-stop as long as I am awake. Who knows how long it will be before I can do laundry, again?
In attempt to magnify the humor of this situation, I'm referring to this storm as Ikie (rhymes with Nike). When Hyrum and I were studying on-line Gustav maps, he drew close to the screen and asked, "What about Ikie?" What a cute boy. "Ikie" does make this little rainstorm sound less menacing.
